Vidtonic DIY Android TV kit

Vidtonic is going to present its new DIY kit to build Android TV on the CES 2011 on January. It’ll include television housing, cables, 1080p LCD panel in various sizes, power supply, a motherboard using an ARM/DSP microprocessor solution and full SDK to build software part. Sure, it’ll be interesting for many Android folks. We saw such approach in the past with hacker Roomba kit or open source version of DVR Neorus. But in my opinion it’d be much better to have set-top-box based kit. It’s cheaper and easier to delivery. In any case, let’s wait till CES 2011 and see the DIY Android TV kit availability and price.

Toshiba and Vizio are going to join Google TV

Google TV

Good news for all Google TV fans. Toshiba and Vizio will present Google TV based AV devices at CES 2011 in January. So, there will be a choice not limited just by Sony’s HDTVs and Blu-ray players.

Google TV is good. But it’s be better for Google, producers and consumers to have some alternative. Because currently there is no other option for web-enabled AV devices except some proprietary solutions developed by manufactures. Will see. Hope next year will bring a lot new technologies in AV area.

LG announced a new firmware for their HDTVs for UK consumers. It brings Facebook, Twitter, BBC iPlayer, Acetrax, Google Maps, Youtube, Picasa and more to the web-enabled HDTVs. LCD and LED HDTVs owners can upgrade firmware even now. It’s done via Internet which is much better then using USB drives. The same update for LG’s plasma TVs will be available in the begining of December.

LG added Yandex widget to its HDTVs

Yandex Widget

Yandex is Russia’s largest internet company, which offers a lot of useful and sometimes unique services. For example, Yandex maps with traffic jams include live webcams. So, you may see the real road situation or enjoy views of your favourite city (St Petersburg in my case). That’s why I was very glad to know LG added Yandex widget to its network enabled HDTVs in the latest firmware update. The widget includes following services: News, Weather, Traffic Jams, Stock Rates, Foto and TV Guide. Each service has separate page optimized for big screens and navigation with remote control.

The Yandex widget is available in the following LG LCD and LED TVs LX9500, LE8500, LX6500, LE7500, LE5500, LD750, LD650, and in the plasmas PX960, PK960, PK760.
