PLEX client for Samsung SmartTV

PLEX is coming to Samsung SmartTV. The client is implemented as a widget. It isn’t perfect yet. But it offers quite enough features such a browsing of media library, watching movies and TV shows, pausing, fastforward, continue watching of movie from where it was stopped. Note to be able use PLEX client on your Samsung TV you should have PLEX server. This is the most important difference between XBMC and PLEX. Client-server architecture allows to bring PLEX to various devices like Roku, LG or Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players.

Z-Wave is coming to TV

Insignia Z-Wave

Sigma Designs replaced old-school IR technology by modern Z-Wave in their Best Buy Insignia brand’s new cTV line of broadband-connected televisions. It isn’t just improve a range of bidirectional remote control and its functionality. But embedding of Z-Wave chip will allow easy integration of AV equipment into smarthome systems. Will see if other main producers of AV devices will do the same or choose someting else – ZigBee or standard RF which is used in wireless mouses and keyboards.

Turns your TV into SmartTV with Netgear NeoTV

Netgear NeoTV

Netgear launched its new NeoTV streaming player. It’s a compact and stylish set-top-box with built-in WiFi b/g/n and 1080p playback support. The NeoTV offers access to the many online media services such Netflix, Vudu HD, YouTube, Pandora and Vimeo, as well as social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Most of them are for US citizen only. But I hope it works with UPnP/DLNA as well which gives possibility to playback media content from NAS or home media server. For sure it has a “Fling” feature to instantly send videos from PC/Laptop/Tablet to the box.

To control NeoTV it can be used simple remote control or free application for iOS/Android devices. In the second case user will get a gesture control for channel navigation and an on-screen QWERTY keyboard for easier text entry and search.

The Netgear NeoTV will be available later this month at $79.99. Taking into account its price and features we may say the NeoTV beats Roku 2 XD, AppleTV and WD WDTV Live as a set-top-box for online services.

“Smart View” mirrors TV to smartphone and more

Smart TV platform

Samsung’s Smart TV platform seems very successful. It hit 5 million TV app downloads worldwide in less than 15 months! The new cool app offered by Smart TV called Smart View. It allows to mirror TV content on Android based smartphone or tablet over WiFi. Moreover, using that app user may access Smart TV apps loaded on the TV, use the app as a game controller, check TV listings and much much more.

Currently Smart VIew is supported by Samsung GALAXY S II only. Other Samsung’s smartphone and tablets will run it soon. I don’t think Samsung will allow to use the Smart View on Android devices of other manufactures. Corporate interests are above all.
